IIT Bombay vs NID Ahmedabad vs NIFT Delhi: which design college is right for you?

This is the question that starts a civil war in every design aspirant WhatsApp group. Someone asks "IIT Bombay or NID?" and suddenly everyone has an opinion. Most of those opinions are based on hearsay, YouTube shorts, or which coaching centre they go to. Let us break this down properly.

The quick comparison

Before we get into details, here is the summary:

• IIT Bombay IDC: Best for product design, interaction design, and tech adjacent careers. The IIT tag opens doors in consulting and tech companies. Highest average package among the three.

• NID Ahmedabad: Best for multidisciplinary design thinking. Stronger in communication design, textile, furniture, and craft based design. Alumni network in design agencies and studios is unmatched.

• NIFT Delhi: Best for fashion, accessory and lifestyle design. If your goal is fashion or textile industry, NIFT is the clear winner. For other design fields, IIT and NID are stronger.

Admission: what it takes to get in

IIT Bombay B.Des: Through UCEED. Around 16 seats for General category. The closing rank in 2026 was AIR 16. Yes, sixteen. You are competing with 15,000+ applicants for a handful of seats. The exam has both MCQ (Part A) and drawing/design aptitude (Part B). This is the hardest design seat to crack in India.

NID Ahmedabad B.Des: Through NID DAT Prelims followed by DAT Mains (studio test + interview). About 80 seats at the Ahmedabad campus. The prelims is mostly drawing and design ability testing, not traditional MCQs. The studio test and interview carry significant weight, so your portfolio and personality matter a lot.

NIFT Delhi B.Des: Through the NIFT entrance exam (GAT + CAT). Around 200 seats at the Delhi campus. The exam is more accessible than UCEED or NID DAT. The creative ability test (CAT) involves drawing and design exercises evaluated by a panel.

Curriculum: what you will actually study

IIT Bombay: The curriculum is tech forward. You will study interaction design, user experience, product design, and increasingly AI and design. The engineering ecosystem of IIT means you can take electives from CS, electrical, or mechanical departments. If you want to work at the intersection of design and technology, this is the place.

NID Ahmedabad: The curriculum is design philosophy heavy. Foundation year is intense and covers all design disciplines before you specialise. NID has a stronger emphasis on craft, material exploration, and cultural context. The education is more experimental and portfolio based. Less structured, more exploratory.

NIFT Delhi: The curriculum is industry focused. You will learn garment construction, textile science, fashion marketing, and retail management. NIFT has strong industry ties and mandatory internships. If you want to work in fashion brands or start your own label, NIFT trains you for that specifically.

Placements and salary: the numbers that matter

IIT Bombay IDC: Average package around 23 to 25 LPA. Top packages go to 40 to 50 LPA (mostly in tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Samsung). The IIT brand name gives you access to companies that do not visit pure design colleges.

NID Ahmedabad: Average package around 18 to 25 LPA. Top performers hit 40+ LPA. NID graduates are preferred by design studios, branding agencies, and increasingly by tech startups for design leadership roles. The alumni network is powerful in the Indian design industry.

NIFT Delhi: Average package around 8 to 15 LPA for design roles, higher for management specialisations. Top fashion brands like Zara, H&M, Aditya Birla Fashion recruit from campus. If you are comparing purely on starting salary, IIT and NID are ahead, but NIFT excels in fashion industry placements.

Campus life: the experience beyond studies

IIT Bombay: You get the full IIT experience, 500 acre campus in Powai with tech fests, cultural events, and a massive alumni network. The design batch is small (around 30 students) within a university of 10,000+. You will be surrounded by engineers, scientists, and MBA students, which broadens your perspective enormously.

NID Ahmedabad: A dedicated design campus with studios, workshops, and exhibition spaces. The batch size is larger (around 80) and everyone is a designer. The environment is more collaborative and creative. Ahmedabad itself is a hub of craft and textile heritage, which influences the education.

NIFT Delhi: Located in the heart of Delhi with strong industry connections. The campus culture is fashion forward with runway shows, design exhibitions, and brand collaborations. Being in Delhi gives you access to the fashion capital of India.

So which one should you pick?

Stop thinking in terms of "best" college. Think about what you want to do after graduation:

• Want to work at Google, Microsoft, or a top product company? IIT Bombay.

• Want to build a design studio, work in branding, or explore craft based design? NID Ahmedabad.

• Want to work in fashion, start a clothing brand, or enter the lifestyle industry? NIFT Delhi.

• Not sure yet? Prepare for UCEED and NID DAT both. Crack both exams, then decide. That is the approach most of our students at DDM take.

How to prepare for multiple exams simultaneously

The good news: UCEED and NID DAT preparation overlaps significantly. Observation skills, design thinking, and drawing ability are tested in both. The differences are in format and emphasis:

• UCEED has more MCQ/MSQ type analytical questions. NID DAT leans heavier on drawing.

• UCEED Part B gives you prompts with strict time limits. NID DAT Prelims drawing section is more open ended.

• NID Mains (studio test + interview) requires a portfolio. Start building one from Day 1.
